Permit granted for removal of dying Alder

Today, the City of Seattle granted WSCC a permit to remove a dying alder at the Lot Hillside (see Grounds map), which is located by the baseball diamond on the Preschool lot.  Because the condition of the tree is deteriorating, it poses some danger in that the limbs can potentially break off and cause damage to someone's property or harm a bystanddar.

    HELP NEEDED
Once the permit is issued, I will need a volunteer to take the tree down.  If you have experience falling trees, can handle a chainsaw, and would like to help with this project, please be sure to talk with me.  Julie can give you my contact information.

In addition, I will possibly rent a chipper and make wood chips out of the smaller branches.  This tree material can then be used in other areas of the grounds as beauty bark and compost.  If you know anyone who can use firewood or have an idea of how to recycle the tree (arts projects?  log chairs?), please do share!

Below are tasks that others can help with:

    • Stockpile logs or load into trucks for those who can use the wood
    • Operate the chipper (organize rental and transportation)
    • Collect tree material to feed into the chipper
    • Handle a wheelbarrow and spread the chips at designated areas around the grounds
    • Bag left-over chips, if any, for people to take home
    • Clean-up crew to sweep work areas and dispose of the material
