Melody Gardens to get some grooming

A quick but big THANK YOU! to Jenn H. for volunteering to put time into keeping the Melody Gardens groomed.  Weeding is a tedious task, but she seems like the right person for the job!

    Cafe Garden work begins

I've begun work on the Cafe Gardens this week, and I hope to make progress quickly.  Many (most) of the shrubs you see there now will be taken out and replaced with herbs.  I look forward to having this area adopted as well, so if you're looking for a side hobby that will bring many joy (and flavors), contact me.

    Tea Gardens gets adopted!

The Tea Gardens were recently adopted by Dan and Joanne Jacobs.  If you feel led to, please join Dan in his effort to revive this area.  Taking out the stumps is no easy task, and Dan has a tender back!  :-)

    YMCA Group Plants Trees
As you may already know, the fruit trees are now planted!  Another one of the CHOSS planning committee volunteers contacted the YMCA, who the brought by a smal group of former-foster teens to do the planting.  It was a very nice time, and the young adults were really great to talk with.  Back to the trees, we have two Japanese plum trees (one red & one yellow) and Lupin cherries.

As for the remaining beds, I will save that space for vegetables until the trees dictate otherwise.  At the moment, I am looking to plant veggies common to the Asian  community.  If you're interested in helping out with this specific garden, please let me know.

Amor mission trip work party at preschool.

A big THANKS to the participants in Saturday fundraiser!  Everyone worked  hard, and had a great time.  The hillside behind the preschool got a very needed trim, and lots of weeding, raking and sweeping happened throughout the preschool grounds.  Thanks to everyone that showed up:  Devon, Dominique, Mim, Thea, Sunshine, Todd, Amanda, and Norma.  I look forward to the next time we get together for another work party.

    Thank you, Dave!

Please join me in thanking Dave Rogge the next time you see him for volunteering to mow the church lawn once  a month!  Dave will be mowing the lawn the first week of the month (to allow for flexibility, Dave has taken a window from the first Saturday of the month to the second).

I would like to find another volunteer to mow the lawn mid-month.  If you get the lawn maintenance bug, please come out and join Dave or I when we're out tending to the lawn.

    Thanks again, Dave!

    Thank you, Daris

A big "Thank you!" to Daris Smith for volunteering to do Litter Control on Saturdays!

I would like to fill another slot for Wednesdays, so if you're interested, please let me know and I will add your name and event to the Grounds calendar!

    Thanks again, Daris!

Grounds work begins at Ginomai Gardens

What a nice Saturday morning for grounds work!  This is the beginning of a lot of work throughout the grounds, and I'm praying that others will join in to help or possibly lead some of the projects!  I'd ask simply for prayers that all goes well.

The first task was to clear out either side of the entry to the Ginomai building and till the soil.  Next up is planting, which means going to the nursery to buy plants! It's like the next best thing to gardening!  Nothing beats the result aspect of it.  If all goes as planned, I will have bought the plants tomorrow, Sunday, and will be out Monday morning (President's Day) to get them in the ground.  Should be fun!  Please go to EVENTS for further details.  At this point, I don't know that I will be sending out invites, but we shall see.

How can you help CH of SS?

How can you participate?  Believe it or not, you may not even have to lift a finger!  Smile  While the Community Harvest of Southwest Seattle needs volunteers for its labor-intensive activities, they also need people who can volunteer a part of their yards.  See below.

      • Do you have existing fruit trees with more yield than you can handle?  CH of SS would be interesting in taking the unused yield (must still be on the trees) and donate it to local organizations such as food banks!  Donor trees are welcome!
      • Would you like to provide a portion of your yard to plant a donor tree that Ch of SS can use for harvest or training purposes?  Tree supplies and varieties vary, but CH of SS may be able to provide you with a free tree to plant in your yard!
      • Do you have an existing tree in need of some maintenance?  Ch of SS needs donor trees as part of their training seminars on how to properly prune trees.  The ideal donor tree should have a large enough area to host a small group.
      • Do you have enough space on your property where CH of SS can grow produce?  CH of SS may be interested in working with you to prep that precious space for yield!

There are other ways to help, and all ideas are welcomed and encouraged!  Please contact me to talk about them!

    Community Harvest of Southwest Seattle

WSCC has teamed up with Community Harvest of Southwest Seattle to provide fruits and vegetables from a plot of land (that we will provide) for those from our local community who are in need.

Much of the work will be done in conjuction with volunteers from CH of SS, but if you are interested in helping, please contact me.

I encourage our youth to consider this part of WSCC's ministry as a form of community service be it through a church group or school.  Also, if your smal group would like to participate in this or other related ministries, please contact me.  There are many exciting opportunities to help!

Permit granted for removal of dying Alder

Today, the City of Seattle granted WSCC a permit to remove a dying alder at the Lot Hillside (see Grounds map), which is located by the baseball diamond on the Preschool lot.  Because the condition of the tree is deteriorating, it poses some danger in that the limbs can potentially break off and cause damage to someone's property or harm a bystanddar.

    HELP NEEDED
Once the permit is issued, I will need a volunteer to take the tree down.  If you have experience falling trees, can handle a chainsaw, and would like to help with this project, please be sure to talk with me.  Julie can give you my contact information.

In addition, I will possibly rent a chipper and make wood chips out of the smaller branches.  This tree material can then be used in other areas of the grounds as beauty bark and compost.  If you know anyone who can use firewood or have an idea of how to recycle the tree (arts projects?  log chairs?), please do share!

Below are tasks that others can help with:

    • Stockpile logs or load into trucks for those who can use the wood
    • Operate the chipper (organize rental and transportation)
    • Collect tree material to feed into the chipper
    • Handle a wheelbarrow and spread the chips at designated areas around the grounds
    • Bag left-over chips, if any, for people to take home
    • Clean-up crew to sweep work areas and dispose of the material
